Grace Chapel
Grace Chapel
Grace Chapel, located in Rockville on Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina, was originally known as the "Church on the Rock." It served the planter families who spent their summers in the village of Rockville along Bohicket Creek. The church was spared during the Civil War; however, the parish's main church, St. John's, was destroyed by fire, as was a similar chapel-of-ease at the summer community of Legareville on John's Island. In 1884, Grace Chapel was relocated to its current site, and the chancel was added in 1890. Following the devastating hurricane of 1893, the chapel was utilized by the American Red Cross, under the leadership of founder Clara Barton, as a center for recovery efforts. Grace Chapel is a part of St. John's Episcopal Church and holds regular Sunday services during the summer months.
