Grounded in the Word

Rooted in Worship

Loving the World

Welcome

Located on John's Island near the renowned Angel Oak, St. John’s Episcopal Church serves the surrounding sea islands, including Wadmalaw Island, Kiawah Island, and Seabrook Island. Founded in 1734, the church is now housed in its fourth building. The first two structures were lost during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, while the third served as a temporary structure. In 1955, the present church building was constructed on the site of previous structures.

St. John's is deeply rooted in the history of God’s people on these islands, yet remains firmly planted in the present with a vision for future generations. St. John’s is dedicated to providing a space of peace, prayer, and care, offering a sanctuary where prayer is at the heart of all things. It is a place for people of all ages to come together in reverence and worship, to be transformed, and to go forth into the world, embodying the love and service of Christ.

As a welcoming sanctuary, St. John’s embraces all who walk through its doors, extending care, compassion, and acceptance to everyone, regardless of background. The messages shared within the church center on love, hope, and the call to serve others as Christ did, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose. Above all, St. John's is a place where individuals can find peace, healing, and the unconditional love of God.

Watch & Reflect

At St. John’s Episcopal Church, our video series offers a meaningful way to engage with faith throughout the week. We release three videos that reflect the heart of our community and beliefs. Sunday Sermons provide key excerpts from the week’s sermon, allowing viewers to revisit and reflect on the message shared in worship. Evening Reflections with the Vicar: Saints and Sacred Lives is a contemplative series that explores the lives of saints, encouraging us to follow their examples in our own spiritual journeys. Lessons from the Angel Oak presents biblical teachings in a simple, engaging format for children, told from the perspective of the ancient Angel Oak and two young seekers, John and Brigid. Together, these videos offer insight, inspiration, and a deeper connection to our shared faith.
